Lip piercings are a type of body piercing that can be placed on the upper lip, lower lip or around the mouth. Although they are the most challenging to heal and take care of, lip piercings are the hottest and most popular among people these days.
There are several different types of lip piercings including the Monroe or Madonna Piercing, Medusa Piercing, Jestrum Piercing, Labret Piercing and Snake Bites Piercings.
A Monroe, or Madonna Piercing, is usually placed above the upper lip, off centered towards one side or the other of the mouth. It is named after Marilyn Monroe’s and Madonna’s unforgettable sexy beauty marks.
The Medusa Piercing is actually very similar to a Labret Piercing, only that it is positioned in the philtrum, directly under the septum of the nose. Labret studs are most commonly used for this type of lip piercing.
A Jestrum Piercing is a sort of Medusa Piercing, more specifically a vertical medusa or labret piercing. The Jestrum Piercing uses a curved bar-bell, and both ends of the piercing are visible externally with the lower part of the bar-bell curving around the underside of the upper lip.
Labret Piercings are one of the many facial piercing variations. It comes from the term “labrum” which refers literally to any type of adornment that is attached to the facial lip. However, it is mostly known for being a piercing that sits right bellow the bottom lip.
Snake Bites Piercings are really two lip piercings positioned on the lower lip, one on each side of the lip and to the same distance from the center. This kind of lip piercing uses rings that simulate snake fangs, but they can also be studs if you prefer.
Something about Lip Piercings you might want to know is that their healing an aftercare is not very complicated but needs to be done correctly and regularly. It takes up to three months to heal properly, depending on each individual’s body.
Here are some tips on how to take care of your lip piercing:
1- Soak the wound or wounds on saline water for about 5 minutes, three times a day.
2- Remove the excess of matter accumulated on the piercing with a cotton bud
3- Afterward, turn the jewellery through the piercing and rinse it with the saline water to flush any left over matter around the piercing
4- Use diluted mouthwash after each meal to help remove any debris.
5- Avoid anything with alcohol, peroxide, iodine, or any strong soaps because they can irritate the fresh piercing and cause extra swelling.
6- Also avoid using things like teatree oil, conventional antibacterial soap, or dish soap because they can damage or kill the skin in and around the piercing, extending the healing process.
7- Avoid or reduce smoking, since it slows the healing process and it facilitates irritation and infections.
